DeKalb makes a pitch for retaining police services

A DeKalb County meeting on public safety in the Tucker area claimed that a recent police feasibility study overlooked key considerations that may render the formation of the city’s own department untenable.

The opinion was based on data and insights provided by DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, Interim Police Chief Gregory Padrick, and COO Zach Williams during the Nov. 20 meeting, which was hosted by Tucker Civic Association.

The DeKalb County officials shared details with about 30 residents and Tucker officials about current crime trends, future and current technology resolutions to crime, and plans to have more staff and vehicles in the area to protect Tucker homes and businesses.

Here is Stephanie’s story about the meeting.

A sign of the times

Tucker’s name will soon be in lights after a unanimous vote by city council during its Nov. 24 meeting.

The city council approved a contract for the construction of gateway signage, which will be built by Hasbun Construction. The city’s first such signage will be placed at 2949 Lawrenceville Hwy., which is near the entrance to Interstate 285.

The two-sided, metal sign will have up-lights and landscaping, including a flower bed. The gateway signage and construction will cost $261,560, according to a presentation from Ishri Sankar, Tucker’s public works director.

Siggers’ owner charged with sexual battery

John Siggers, the owner of Tucker-based Siggers Hairdressers, who is the subject of a sexual assault and harassment lawsuit filed by a former employee, has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual battery.

DeKalb District Attorney’s Office representatives stated that the two charges are misdemeanors that the Office of the Solicitor General will handle.

Siggers was charged on Friday, Nov. 21, and released on an undisclosed bond about five hours later. According to information on the DeKalb County Sheriff website, the incidents associated with the charges occurred on Dec. 2, 2023, and May 3, 2024. One date aligns with allegations filed by a former employee cited in a lawsuit filed on Aug. 14 by former Siggers apprentice Stephanie Dhondt.
