Memorial Day ceremony attendees hear themes of service and thankfulness

Hundreds attending Dunwoody’s Memorial Day ceremony at Brook Run Park on May 26 heard messages of hope from featured speaker U.S. Air Force Maj. Rick Scheff.
Scheff, born and raised in Dunwoody, has served more than a decade, with stints in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and the Arabian Gulf, as well as various Middle Eastern nations. He is currently assigned to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C., where he works as a chief evaluator pilot for the 20th Operations Group, 20th Fighter Wing.
He has been highly decorated, having been awarded four Air Medals and a Gallant Unit Citation, which was awarded to members of the 79th Expeditionary Fighter Squad for outstanding heroism in combat.
Scheff discussed the meaning of service and sacrificed, saying that military service means that “war is something that happens over there, and not over here, which is a good thing.”
“On Memorial Day, people who want to honor the members of those who served in the military should perform a service, small or big,” Scheff said. “Make this day a better day, whether it’s picking up a piece of trash or helping out your neighbor.”

Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch, Dunwoody’s Police Chief Mike Carlson, and Dunwoody City Council Member Joe Seconder all participated in the ceremony. Dunwoody Baptist Pastor Robert Comeaux led the invocation and the benediction.
The Georgia State Defense Force Band, led by Lt. Col. Glenn R. Moore played the “Star-Spangled Banner” and songs associated with each branch of the military.
