Atlanta International School celebrating 40th anniversary

Atlanta International School (AIS) announced that it is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
To commemorate the four-decades-long achievement, the private International Baccalaureate school will be conducting a series of activities all year long, including student-led retrospectives (interviews with founders and former students), talks with community leaders regarding the future of education, as well as numerous community gatherings and ’80s-inspired festivities.
Founded in 1985 by a group of parents and local supporters, AIS opened its doors with just 51 students in a converted army barracks on Powers Ferry Road.
Today, the school serves over 1,300 students (representing more than 90 nationalities) across two campuses.
AIS remains the only school in the Southeast to offer all four International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, in addition to acclaimed language immersion tracks in Chinese, French, German and Spanish.
Since it was established, the educational institution has racked up a number of milestones under its belt, such as opening its second campus in North Fulton in 1995-1996, achieving IB Continuum School status in 2008, integrating UN Global Goals into its curriculum in 2014 and launching AISx (a flexible program that allows students to customize their schedules) in 2023.
Most recently, AIS opened a tennis academy at its new Sandy Springs campus this year.
“The spirit of inclusivity, innovation and intentionality that defined our founders remains central to AIS today,” said Kevin Glass, head of Atlanta International School. “AIS was designed to be a different kind of private school, and we continue to fulfill that mission with our global perspective, our emphasis on critical thinking and our commitment to supporting students’ passions.
