Brookhaven Eco-Stewards host naturalist walk at Ashford Preserve

Brookhaven environmentalists will host a naturalist walk and volunteer clean up at Ashford Preserve from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10.

Brookhaven Eco-Stewards, DeKalb County Commissioner Michelle Long Spears, and Hands On Atlanta President and CEO Jay Cranman will explore the property and talk about DeKalb’s environmental focus. Cranman will be celebrating his 50th birthday at the event.

“Our parks and natural spaces are some of DeKalb County’s greatest assets – not only for recreation but for education, health, and environmental stewardship,” said Long Spears. “I’m proud to join EcoAddendum and our community members for this walk as we celebrate our unique urban forest and build deeper connections with the land and with one another. Together, we’re creating a healthier, more sustainable future for DeKalb.”

Ashford Preserve is a natural forest located off Clairmont Avenue in Brookhaven, across from Peachtree DeKalb Airport.

According to the Brookhaven Eco-Stewards, Brookhaven parks and natural landscapes are threatened by invasive species, and using chemical spray treatments only further harms the ecosystem. Several Brookhaven parks and residents’ property contains old growth forest remnants dating back to the Muscogee Creek Nation.

The eco-stewards will host a fishing day on Saturday, May 17, as well as park events on Sunday, June 8 at Osborne Park and on Sunday, July 6 at Murphey Candler Park.

Classes and volunteer events by eco-stewards provide in-depth training on forest health, ecology, trees, native and invasive species, wildlife and how to restore native ecosystems, according to their website.
