Brookhaven’s City Centre project hit with color mismatch issue

Brookhaven’s $78 million new city hall, scheduled to open in August, is experiencing a colorful setback.

The dome atop Brookhaven’s City Centre was intended to reflect muted tones of the
city’s signature colors – blue and green, consistent with the design vision supported by the community, mayor, and city council members.

But last week when the installation of the dome glass began, residents and passersby noticed something was amiss. Online, people have been comparing the bright red, yellow, and blue glass panels to MagnaTiles or a circus big top.

Brookhaven City Centre has been highly anticipated. It is the most expensive city-funded project, which will house governmental offices, public spaces for festivals and a farmer’s market, and a venue for personal events like weddings and parties. It was on track to open just 18 months from breaking ground, Mayor John Park said at his State of the City address.

Now Park has issued a statement about the glass.

“The Mayor and City Council deeply value the time and input of the thousands of residents who participated in the multi-year public engagement process that shaped the vision for the new City Centre. The mosaic glass planned for the dome was intended to reflect muted tones of the City’s signature colors – blues, greens, and complementary hues – consistent with the design vision supported by the community, mayor, and council,” Park said.

“The glass recently installed appears significantly brighter than expected,” the statement continued. “In response, the mayor and city council are taking immediate steps to have the glass removed. The dome was always intended to be adaptable.  The dome will remain open-air until further notice.”

The city has not released information about how much the mistake will cost nor who was responsible for the incorrect glass color.
