CDC Shooting: Memorial grows for fallen officer; staff teleworking Monday
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employees will telework on Monday, Aug. 11, as a security assessment is made at the campus following Friday’s shooting incident.
More than 40 bullet holes were found in four different buildings of the CDC headquarters adjacent to Emory University on Clifton Road, according to officials. While authorities have not announced a motive for the shooting, sources told CNN that the suspect – Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw – may have targeted the CDC campus over health concerns he blamed on the COVID-19 vaccine.
DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose was fatally shot when he responded to the shooting. Rose, a Marine veteran who had only been on the force for six months, leaves behind a wife, two children, and another child on the way, DeKalb CEO Loraine Cochran-Johnson said in a Friday night press conference.
A memorial continued to grow on Sunday afternoon at the entrance to CDC headquarters on Clifton Road.
A steady stream of people stopped to leave their condolences to Rose on a sign, while others left flowers and notes.
There were also notes in support of CDC staff, which has seen its staff cut by half and funding and programs decimated by the Trump administration’s budget plan.
