Finishing summer strong: Cool activities for Atlanta tweens and teens

The countdown to school is back, it’s hot outside, and parents are running out of ideas to keep tweens and teens entertained. Rough Draft has collected ideas to finish the summer strong, including some specific dates and some spots to visit any time.
Food
Spend an afternoon bopping around ice cream shops. The West Side has three shops to hit within 2 miles: Morelli’s for a classic ice cream sundae, Jeni’s for wildly creative flavors, and Izzy’s Ice Kreme for a taste of Greece.
Teens who like to get a little dressy and dine al fresco will enjoy mocktails and a meal at The Chastain. Perched right on lush Chastain Park, it’s a perfect opportunity to take some selfies in the neighborhood.
Truett’s Luau is a Chick-Fil-A restaurant that features Hawaiian-inspired dishes like pineapple chicken tacos, luau burger, sweet potato waffle fries, and passionfruit punch. It’s kitschy fun.
Art
If you’re feeling crafty, Spruill Arts Center in Dunwoody is hosting Crafternoon on Saturday, July 19, free of charge.
High Museum? Done it. Try some of the metro’s smaller museum tours at SCAD Fash, Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), David J. Sencer CDC Museum, Mimms Museum of Technology and Art, the Federal Reserve, Breman Museum, Atlanta Contemporary, and the Trap Music Museum. Check the website before venturing out – these museums are not open every day.
Sports and exercise

On July 26, Atlanta Roller Derby is in action at Agnes Scott College in Decatur. At 5:30 p.m., the Toxic Shocks battle the Glamma Rays, and at 7 p.m., it’s Apocalypstix versus the Black Water Reapers.
The Brookhaven Bucks, a collegiate wooden baseball league, play at Murphey Candler Park on July 16 and 18.
Bike the Beltline. While you’re there, try a new spur, search for Tiny Doors, and enjoy free art in the form of sculptures, murals, and photography. Related: Learn how to repair your own bike with Brookhaven Bike Alliance.
SK8 the roof at Ponce City Market to roller skate while watching Atlanta’s skyline or head to Tucker for yoga with dwarf goats.
And if your teens are the “can’t-be-bothered-to-sweat” type, book a pool day with Resort Pass or try Five Iron Golf indoor simulator.
Nature
Go fishing, rent kayaks, or hike in Sandy Springs, at Brookhaven’s Murphey Candler Park or at Morgan Falls in Sandy Springs.
Cool down while you Shoot the Hooch on a scorching hot Atlanta day. Don’t forget a cooler and waterproof speaker.
Artsy
Take an art class with Rosebud Studios, blow glass in Decatur, or take a plant class in Sandy Springs.
The outdoor movie at Town Brookhaven on Thursday, July 24 is “The Parent Trap” (1998).
Try one of the events at the Bird Book, attend a banned book club at Little Shop of Stories, or pop into Space Queen in Candler Park for vintage finds.
Atlanta has so much to offer for tweens and teens. Don’t let them tell you’re they’re bored. You should have already been to these, but if not, who are we to judge? Mercedes Benz, Delta Museum, Carlos Museum, Braves stadium, Georgia Aquarium discounted after 4 p.m.
