Local students mix math and baseball with MLB STEM League

Two Atlanta students were among four nationwide selected to attend the 2025 MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby last month, due to their standout performance in the Regional MLB STEM League.
STEM League was launched in partnership with the MLB Players Trust and the nonprofit Learn Fresh in 2022. This initiative uses a baseball-themed board game with math to boost academic achievement and engagement in students. By blending baseball strategy with math, the model is designed to make learning both competitive and fun.
Jayvion Dickerson, a rising high school senior from Palmetto, and Jeremiah Hindsman, a rising eighth grader from East Point, won the Atlanta Regional STEM League Tournament on June 4, earning them the invitation to Truist Park for the All-Star Game. Around 30,000 students across the country and the world competed this year.
“I’ve always liked and been really good at math,” Hindsman said. “This experience showed me new ways I could use it in real life. It was fun and cool to mix math and baseball.”
In addition to the students from the United States, two students from Japan, one from the Dominican Republic, and one from Brazil also attended.
Hindsman’s and Dickerson’s performances made them eligible for the All-Star experience. They had on-field access during Home Run Derby batting practice and watched the All-Star game at Truist Park.
Hindsman can still recall his reaction when he found out he was going to go to the All-Star Game and get to meet some of the world’s best players.
“I was so excited! I smiled really big and told my mom right away,” he said. “I felt so proud and happy that me and Jayvion’s hard work paid off.”
Amy Hever, the director of the MLB Players Trust, is excited about this particular project and how it ties back to the mission of the trust, which aims to support causes that matter to players such as youth empowerment and education.
“This innovative program brings excitement of baseball into the classroom,” Hever said. “We are trying to cultivate a deeper appreciation for baseball by making it more accessible, engaging, and relevant to students from all backgrounds.”
For Hindsman and Dickerson, the STEM League has done just that, creating an experience that they will never forget. This initiative will continue next year at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia.
Hindsman urged other students to join the STEM League and gave advice for those considering the opportunity.
“If you want to join the STEM League don’t be afraid to try new things,” he said. “It’s okay if you don’t know everything. Just have fun, ask questions, and try your best!”
