The DeKalb Board of Education has appointed Norman C. Sauce III as the interim superintendent of the DeKalb County School District.
Sauce, who previously served as chief of schools, will take on the interim role as of Monday, Nov. 14, making him officially the sixth superintendent for the district in the last 10 years.
“Our board was pleased to extend Dr. Sauce a one-year contract,” Board Chair Deirdre Pierce said in a statement. “The move ensures stable leadership and continuity in the district’s progress. Over the past month, Dr. Sauce has demonstrated strong leadership, a clear vision for student success, and a commitment to transparency
and collaboration.”
Sauce was named acting superintendent in October after former DCSD superintendent Devon Q. Horton was indicted on 17 charges by the U.S. Attorney for acts he allegedly committed while serving as the superintendent of Evanston-Skokie School District 65 in Illinois.
As the online chatter begin to build from the community and parents, Sauce recorded a video imploring families to stand with the district as they overcome the scandal brought on by Horton’s indictment.
“Even in times of challenge or change, our commitment to our students and our mission remains steady,” Sauce said in the October video. “When we say, I stand with DCSD, we’re not just sharing words, we’re showing our unity through action, compassion and collaboration. So today, I invite you to stand with us.”
Despite the recent uproar, DCSD has seen strides academically across the board, with a graduation rate of 81.4 percent, DeKalb students outperforming both state and national ACT averages, and recent promising news about several DeKalb schools outperforming state averages in the 2025 College and Career Ready Performance Index.
Sauce has served as DCSD chief of student services since February 2024. He supported and supervised the district’s exceptional education, English language learners, gifted education, and early learning and pre-K departments in that role. He also served as DCSD area superintendent for high schools.
“I am deeply humbled and honored by the Board of Education’s confidence in appointing me as interim superintendent of DCSD,” Sauce said in a statement
